The Effects of Arginine on the Blood Ammonia levels in the Patients with Advanced Liver Cirrhosis

Abstract
The effects of L-arginine HCL on the blood ammonia levels and states of hepatic encephalopathy were investigated in 15 cases of liver cirrhosis accompanied with coma state. 3 cases of liver cirrhosis without cama and 5 cases of stomach and gall bladder disease who admitted to the Dept. of Internal Medicine of S.N.U. Hospital.
The results were summarized as follows.
1) In hepatic coma, marked reduction of blood ammonia level and improved state of consciousness were observed in 22 times among 29times injected L-arginine HCL intavenously with other therapeutic method, and also in 7 times which did not show good results the inappropriate doses of L-arginine HCL were demonstrated.
2) In the cases of hepatic coma managed without arginine, good results were obtained in 2 times only out or 8 times, but blood ammonia level and comatous state could be reducible with administrating L-arginine HCL.
3) Teh value of administration of L-arginine HCL with the other therapeutic methods for hepatic coma and increasing amount of that in the cases showing negative result were discussed also.
